Helen Sue Markley, 85, of Weston passed away on Monday, January 4, 2016 in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a brief illness. She was born in Heaters, WV on November 11, 1930: daughter of the late Frederick Peterson Shaver and Mintie Jane (Cogar) Shaver. On September 8, 1962, she married James V. Markley, who survives.
Mrs. Markley is also survived by one son: David F. (Beth) Johnston of Virginia Beach and one grandson: Spencer David (Jesselyn) Johnston, a Merchant Marine. She is also survived by one sister: Elizabeth June (Tony) Audia of Reynoldsville, WV and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by one brother: Howard James Shaver.
Mrs. Markley retired as a clerk with the West Virginia Department of Highways. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church of Weston for more than 50 years. She was a graduate of Weston High School with the class of 1949. Helen was a member of the Fern Leaf Rebecca Lodge #101, life member of the Lewis County Emergency Squad where she was the first female EMT in Lewis County and active member of the Teresa Snaith Auxillary of the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. She also worked with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts for years, member of the Loyal Order of Moose #1376 of Weston and the Red Hat Society.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Richard Justice officiating. Interment will follow services in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Jane Lew, WV. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Helen may be expressed at hardman-palettifuneralhome.com.
