Condolence: Just heard today of Russ's passing. He and I went to Guilford College together for four years. We attended the Brunnenburg study abroad program where we were roommates as well. My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to bring our 11-year-old daughter with us to visit Brunnenburg just over two weeks ago, and I was telling her stories about my roommate Russ. I had no idea at the time that he had died just over a week beforehand. He was a good, kind, smart person. I miss him.

Condolence: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Russell. Russell and I attended Lewis County High School together. We later reconnected when my son played youth football in Lewis County and Russell made the effort to video the football games and produce cd's for the parents. During that time, I would often to talk to Russell and on occasion give him a ride home from the field after he had spent a long day filming the games. I always enjoyed our conversations, spirited debates, and laughs we shared. He was intelligent, insightful, honest, and funny. I will be forever grateful for his efforts in recording the football games and allowing me and other parents to have tangible memories of the games. My condolences to his family. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Condolence: Russell had a very positive influence on me during my formative years. He taught me to question conventional wisdom and to look at things from multiple perspectives. This included an open mindedness to what we are capable of doing and being, and to not place self-imposed limits on ourselves. I am a better person because of the time I spent with Russ.

Condolence: Dear Coach Porterfield and family, I am so heartbroken over the loss of Russell. Russell graduated with my son. I have known him for years. Russ and I talked a lot on Facebook and when I would see him at the local stores. I was a social worker at Sharpe before retiring a few years ago and in my 31 years of observing, I never saw anyone work as hard as Russ in trying to get well and stay well. He has found his peace. I know he loved his family because when he was at his best, he shared that often. I pray the rest of e family can find peace and comfort too eventually. Russ was kind, compassionate and one of the most intelligent people that I have ever met. You did a fine job raising such a gentle man when he was well and he was always wanting to help others who were less fortunate than he.May God be with all of you.
