Ronald  Gene "Sonny"  Smith
Ronald Gene “Sonny” Smith, 80, of Weston passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 in Fairmont Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born in Lewis County on July 10, 1936: son of the late Edward F. Smith and Gertrude E. (Means) Smith. On November 10, 1959, Sonny married Charlotte F. (Barker) Smith, who survives.
Sonny is also survived by three children: Connie Faye Smith, Rhonda Jean (James) Cogar and Randy Gene Smith all of Weston, two grandchildren: Larry Snider, II (Shanna Cayton) and Charlotee (Tony) Smith and five great grandcchildren: Austin, Sierra and Alleigha Snider, Logan Higgins and Luke Smith. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including a special nephew he considered a brother: Michael Taylor of Weston. In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by one grandson: James Russell Cogar, II, one great grandson: Wyatt Snider, one sister: Dorothy I. “Dot” West, one brother: Donald “Bud” Smith,one ½ brother: Perry Smith.
Mr. Smith was a truck driver for Halliburton Company, a roust-a-bout with Hope Gas Company and also worked with Allegheny Nuclear Survey, Rocky Drilling, Pace Bower and Linegers. Sonny also worked for Westinghouse Electric. After retiring, Sonny drove van for the Lewis County Senior Center of Weston, WV. He was a member of the Weston Church of God where he was a Trustee, Sunday school superintendent and an all around maintenance man. Sonny enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a collection of knives. He also liked watching football with his favorite teams being the Pittsburgh Steelers and the WV Mountaineers. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Wednesday, February 8, 2016 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. from Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Eddie Barker and Pastor Craig Snyder officiating. Interment will follow services in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery of the Kincheloe community in Harrison County, WV. Full Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and the Lewis County Honor Guard.
