Edith Ethel Messenger, 85, of Weston passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2016 in Holbrook Nursing Home of Buckhannon following an extended illness. She was born in Braxton County on December 9, 1930: daughter of the late Jessie R. Ware and Ora Grace (Mealey) Ware. On November 26, 1954, Edith was married to Daniel W. Messenger, Sr., who preceded her in death on December 26, 1999.
Mrs. Messenger is survived by four daughters: Rose (Wayne) Neal of Weston, Brenda (Greg) Hitt of Linn, WV, Linda Rowan of Weston and Diana Atkins of Roanoke, WV, one son: Daniel W. Messenger, Jr. of Weston, 12 grandchildren: John (Shirley) Shaffer of Weston, Spring (Michael) Franklin of Weston, Gary (Teresa) Rowan of Grafton, William (Traci) Rowan of Weston, Sonja (Danny) James of Roanoke, Lorrie (Jack) McCord of Sand Fork, Scott Radcliff of NC, Philip (Roxanne) Radcliff of Linn, Michael Radcliff of Clarksburg, and Amanda, Danielle, and April Messenger of Weston and 31 great grandchildren. She raised two granddaughters: Sonja James and Lorrie McCord. She was also survived by two sister-in-laws: Stachie Messenger of Ohio and Alice Messenger of Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Daniel, Edith was preceded in death by one daughter: Donna Kaye Claypoole and one brother: Willard Kemp Ware.
Mrs. Messenger was a glassworker with the West Virginia Glass Specialty Company of Weston for numerous years. Edith retired from St. Patrick Church with 18 years of service. She enjoyed crocheting and hunting.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Ron Brown and Pastor Dan Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow services in the Peterson Cemetery of Weston, WV. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Edith may be expressed at hardman-palettifuneralhome.com.
