Margaret Jean ”Peggy” Vandergrift Doyle passed from this life into life eternal on August 6, 2018, at the age of 89. She had friends by her side, and the care and support of the kind staff of Holbrook-On-The-Hill of Buckhannon, WV..
Peggy was born on December 28, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughter and only child of Ada Frances Vandergrift. She grew up in Chester, West Virginia with her mother and grandmother. After moving with her mother to Weston in 1943, Peggy attended Weston High School, where she graduated with the Class 0f 1947. She always enjoyed the fellowship of her classmates at reunions and class luncheons.
Peggy married Robert R. “Bob” Doyle on the evening of her high school graduation, May 23, 1947. Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage before Bob’s passing on June 23, 2012. They set up housekeeping in San Antonio, Texas, where they lived for three years. They moved back to Weston, just in time for the flood of 1950, in which they lost everything. In 1954 they purchased a home overlooking McCann’s Run, where they lived for 34 years. They loved the Westfield-McCann’s run community. In 1984, Peg and Bob moved to The Farm on Wheeler’s Fork of Vandalia. They lived there together for 28 years. Peg and Bob’s home was always open to friends and family. Their hospitality was legendary. They hosted pig roasts, apple butter making, visits from kindergarten classes, hayrides, sleigh riding, hunting parties, sausage making, breakfasts in the barn, suppers on the deck, and coffee and Peg’s pie on the sunporch anytime.
Peggy worked for C. Fred Bailey at the Exxon Bulk Plant from 1955-2008. She was a Notary Public, and the Executive Director of the Stonewall Jackson Heritage Arts & Crafts Jubilee from its beginning in 1974, until its final year in 2008.
Service to her community was a large part of Peggy’s life. She joined the Lightburn Farm Women’s Club in 1956, and was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club at the state and local levels. She was named BPW’s Woman of the Year in 1980. Peggy was a charter member of the Lewis County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, and was active in the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, and received the honor of Lewis Countian of The Year. Peggy and her husband Bob supported 4-H and FFA.
Peggy had a green thumb. Her flower gardens were beautiful. She also enjoyed many crafts including ceramics during her leisure time.
Peggy was a Christian by faith and example. She was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church. She also attended the Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Peggy leaves a legacy of love and service. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and many special friends, including Arthur and Nancy Cogar of Weston, who provided her with loving care and Saturday trips to The Farm, the home of her heart.
At Peggy’s request and like her husband, Bob, her wishes to be cremated were honored. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. from the Vandalia United Methodist Church with Reverend Dwayne Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Broad Run Baptist Church Cemetery of Jane Lew, WV. Fellowship time will be held on Saturday from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m. at the church before services.
