Amos Eugene “Shorty” Nicholson, 91, of Weston went home on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 to be with the Lord at his home with family and church family by his side. He was born in Doddridge County on April 21, 1927: son of the late Amos Edward Nicholson and Dulcie (Kelley) Nicholson. Shorty married Susie Olive Blake, daughter of Alfred and Lura (Lipscomb) Blake, on July 29, 1945 in Doddridge County and was married for 72 years, who survives.
Shorty is also survived by two children: Randall Eugene Nicholson and wife Betty Ann of Weston and Celia Linger and husband Larry of Fairmont, three grandchildren: Shawn (Stacy) Linger and Todd Linger both of Fairmont and Chasity (Chris) Anderson of Shinnston and six great grandchildren: Kylee and Keaton Linger, Eliana and Eva Linger and Brayden and Nicholas Anderson. He is also survived by two brothers: Roy (Creola) Nicholson and Milton Dean Nicholson of New Milton, two sisters: Betty Shafer of Cambridge, OH and Nancy Lee (Wayne) Skinner of Mineral Wells, WV and several nieces and nephews. Shorty will be missed by his companion, “Tippy”, Shi Tzu puppy. In addition to his parents, Shorty was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Nicholson was a heavy equipment operator for Bitner Fuel, Bell Mining and Costelac Coal for many years, retiring in 1990. Shorty was considered one of the best drag-line operators in the state and his services were in great demand. He was an active member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church where he was active in the men’s group of the church. Mr. Nicholson was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force from Aug. 4, 1945 through July 30, 1946 during World War II. He held the rank of Private in the 3704th Army Air Force Unit as a medical corpsman.
Shorty was very active in military and civic organizations in West Virginia. He was a member of the Jane Lew American Legion Post# 166 where he was a charter member and past commander and was honored in 2015 for 50 years of continuous membership. He was also a member of the Rebekah-Odd Fellow Lodge #88 of Lightburn, Lewis Odd Fellow Lodge #286 and the Grand Lodge IOOF of West Virginia. He was also a charter member of the Jane Lew Lion’s Club.
Family and friends will be received at Broad Street United Methodist Church 210 Broad Street Weston on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 2-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from the Broad Street United Methodist Church sanctuary with Reverend Richard Justice officiating. Interment will follow services in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Jane Lew, WV. Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Army Air Force and the Lewis County Honor Guard.
