James Patrick “Pat” Karp, 94, of Stalnaker Addition Horner passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 in Ruby Memorial Hospital of Morgantown following a brief illness. He was born in Tiffin, OH on March 17, 1923: son of the late Francis Karp and Olive (Harnish) Karp. On August 25, 1951, he married Roberta Lee (Corley) Karp, who preceded him in death on November 28, 2009.
Mr. Karp is survived by 8 children: Diana M. (Rue) Thompson of Buckhannon, Nancy C. (Charles) Frame of Stonewood, James P. Karp, II of Horner, Linda L. Lamb of Bunker Hill, WV, Gregory L.. (Tammy) Karp of Fairmont, Sara E. (Steve) King of Alum Bridge, Rebecca E.(Dave) King and Joseph F. (Anita) Karp both of Weston. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren: Cheryl Moore, Heather Brunton, Gwen Masterman, Heidi Keith, Brad Thompson, Annie Thompson, Hollie Frame, Hannah Frame-Amos, Drew Lamb, Brittany Ware, Ryan King, Nathan King, Chasity King, Chelsey Novak, Cody King, Bryson Karp and Tyler Karp, 15 great grandchildren and three on the way, and one great great grandchild.Pat is also survived by several nieces and nephews and brother-in-law: Robert (Sarah) Corley of Atlanta, GA. In addition to his parents and wife, Roberta, Pat was preceded in death by one grandchild: Bethany King, two great grandchildren, three brothers: Tom, Ray, and Richard Karp and one sister: Yvonne Hamilton.
Pat was a coal miner where he was a heavy equipment operator. Pat had a great love for all sports, golfing, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at family reunions where he got to fish and play cornhole with his kids and grandkids. He was recruited by WVU to play basketball after high school. He was also asked to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, he chose to go into the Army during WW II where he was awarded the bronze star.He played semi-pro baseball for the Weston Independents. He coached Little League Basketball for 12 years taking St Patrick’s to several championships. He also coached Little League Baseball for 5 years.In his later years, he loved playing golf every day with his golfing buddies. He recorded 5 hole-in-ones during his lifetime. The last one was when he was 93 years old. He also enjoyed playing in many golf tournaments, especially with his grandsons. He loved the Mountaineers and was an avid fan. He went to his last WVU basketball game with his sons in November 2017.Pat was a member of the United Mine Workers and a lifelong member of St. Patrick Church of Weston.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 2-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. from St Patrick Catholic Church with Reverend James R. DeViese, Jr. as celebrant. Interment will follow services in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Jane Lew, WV. Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and the Lewis County Honor Guard.
