Madeline H. Smith Eckes, 91, of Buckhannon passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Holbrook Nursing Home of Buckhannon. She was born in Copen, WV on March 19, 1926: the daughter of the late Wirt and Violet McCray Smith. On October 8, 1946, she married Arthur Eckes, who passed away on March 1, 1993.
Mrs. Eckes is survived by 4 children: Judi Wyatt of Florida, Tom Eckes of Virginia, Jim Eckes and wife Donna of Buckhannon and Herb Eckes and wife Glenda of Clarksburg, 7 grandchildren: Diane Wyatt, Doug Wyatt, Laura Eckes, Jaime Tenney, Scotty Eckes, Courtney Eckes and Casey Eckes and three great grandchildren: Claudia Tenney, Mallory Tenney and Kristopher Wyatt. She is also survived by one brother: William Smith of Virginia and one sister: Virginia Ellis of Delaware and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Arthur, Madeline was preceded in death by a step mother: Fannie King Smith, two brothers: Kemp and Gayle Smith and three sisters: Jean Lowther, Elsie Steerman and Mary Lee Collins.
Madeline was a homemaker and a Christian by faith. During WW II, she sewed parachutes and made bombs for the war effort.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Eddie McDaniels officiating. Interment will follow services in the William L. Smith Cemetery at Mary Conrad Park on RT#19 S Roanoke, WV.
