Obituary for Shirley Jean Taylor (Burkhammer)

Shirley Jean Taylor transitioned to her new home on December 28, 2021 in Heaven. She was born May 1, 1947, daughter of Roy C. Burkhammer and Ethel Ione (Donaldson) Burkhammer. Surviving are one brother, Rodney C. Burkhammer (Carol) of Weston, Special nephew, Carlton Burkhammer ( David) of Virginia, Carmen Burkhammer niece, Florida, Sandra (Donaldson) Lasonis (was a very close cousin, almost her sister), Pa, Helen Burkhammer, Aunt, Buckhannon, Donna Stump (Bob), Buckhannon, Richard Harris, cousin, Ohio, Brenda Meador, cousin, Ohio, and Bryan Donaldson, cousin, Ohio.

August 30, 1969, Shirley married the love of her life and soul mate, Bob Taylor and they have enjoyed 52 plus beautiful years of Happiness raising a beautiful family. Surviving are three wonderful children who are loved beyond measure, Misty Dawn (Taylor) Montgomery and husband Chris, our favorite son-in-law. Their children and our super grandchildren are Jacob Montgomery, Super Grandson (Tori Stout), Jillian Montgomery, Super Grand Daughter and Jenna Montgomery, Super Granddaughter, David Taylor and Super Grandson Hayden Taylor, and Adam Taylor and Tina Taylor, favorite daughter-in-law and Super Grandson Landyn Taylor.

Shirley's plans and dreams at age twelve were to become a Registered Nurse and after college find her soul mate and raise a family. She wanted a large family, live in a 2 story home, have a fireplace, swing on the front porch and large back yard. Her plans were not to marry a person named Bob. She had an uncle that was named Bob who lived outside of the lines and did not treat his family as a father should treat his family. Look who she chose as her soul mate. Thank you, Jesus.

Shirley's family was her prized possession and anything they were involved in, she was there cheering them on. She loved holidays especially Christmas. Every room in our home was decorated with the sparkle and colorful scenery of the season. She never missed an occasion to decorate or celebrate. As each Holiday was a gift giving occasion for the family and was even magnified for Birthday's, not one gift but 8-10 fancy wrapped gifts for each birthday in the family. With our family, nearly every month is celebrated. In fact, Shirley even created a new gift giving holiday, New Year's Eve, when the New Year’s Man would leave multiple gifts for every family member. Of course, the gifts were left at Grandmother's house so that you would have to come by and pick up your gifts. Grandma got to hug and squeeze her loved ones.

Broad Street United Methodist has been Shirley's Home Church since she was a little girl. Growing up in her Church and learning about Jesus. In the early years of Broad Street, the Church was known as the EUB Church. Shirley got married in her home Church and a transformation set her life on a more purposeful course. Rev. Clifford West became the new minister in 1990 and soon after his arrival, he asked Shirley if she would create a floral arrangement for the Altar Table in the front of the Church for each Sunday Service, and also, to change the colors around the altar. She was truly happy and excited to be of service to the Church. As time moved on, Rev. West was asking her to create a backdrop scene for a special Christmas Service. In a year or so after, Shirley was busy making floral arrangements for many occasions Rev. West mentioned to Shirley that the Church Custodian was leaving. On a lark, he asked her" Do you want to do that too, be the custodian, not knowing it was a paying job. "Sure if I can help the Church, so she was the custodian for many years. Next, came hand sewing costumes for the Vacation Bible School mascot for each year’s themed occasion, Holy Week Service, each night was a different set with different scenes, Live Last Supper Presentation, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Special Candle Light service, created a life size Manager on stage in the front of the Church so that people could walk thru, larger than life size of Jesus with HIS outstretched arms and the list goes on. Shirley's Love of the Our Lord and Savior was the most important in her Life. Jewelry, fancy clothes, and being a social butterfly was not her life style. She did love the ocean and beach, most notably Ocean City Maryland. She has been there many times until the Ocean got too far from the motel and too far for her to walk about 3-4 years ago. Shirley loved all board games. Scrabble was one that would cause her blood pressure to elevate, fierce competitor. Misty played more Scrabble games than anyone else with her, Mother and Daughter, quality time. Just about the time that Misty would look over to the score board and she was ahead by 25-30 points and had the confident feeling of winning, Shirley would lay down the panels and make a word worth 60 points and win the game. Shirley was delighted to play Scrabble on the internet, like over the years, 29,850 games. She played people from all over the world.
Shirley did enjoy serving on the Lewis County Park Board, another way of helping the community to try to have a better quality for all of Lewis County.

Shirley's closest and dearest friends were Ginny Ruble, Jerry and Avah Stalnaker, and Donna Albright.
Brittany Gregory (Super Nurse) Nurse Practitioner of the ICU Unit Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital was and is an absolute ANGEL during Shirley’s 28 day stay in hospital. Thank You.
