Obituary for Robert Lee "Bob" Swiger

Robert Lee “Bob” Swiger of Cottage Avenue, Weston, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on May 21, 2023, after a long and full life.

Beloved son of Jacob Argyle and Thelma Taylor Swiger, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rose Ann Calabrese Swiger, his brother, Frederick David Swiger, and many cherished friends and family members.

Bob was a veteran of the Air Force, flying 74 missions as a gunner on an A-26 Marauder in the Korean War, during which he was wounded. He later joined the Army Special Forces (Green Berets) and retired from the Army Reserve as a Sergeant Major. He received degrees in Business Administration and Education from Fairmont State and West Virginia University, and retired from Consolidated Gas Transmission Corporation as District Superintendent after 34 years of service.

A faithful member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Weston, Bob was a Eucharistic Minister and benefactor of both the Church and St. Patrick School. He was a member of Weston American Legion Post 4, VFW Post 1976, the Weston Moose Lodge and the Cotillion Club. An avid golfer, Bob was a former President of Deerfield Country Club, an organization he helped to form. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Lewis County Park.

Bob is survived by Kevin and Dee Swiger of Ormond Beach, Fl, Mary Anne and Nelson Ellifritz of Falling Waters, WV, Elizabeth and Tim Moneypenny of Weston, his beloved grandchildren Sean and Christian Swiger, Jalyn Riggleman and partner Ryan Goodrow, Cofa and Patrick McCarthy, Emily and Ethan Hawver, Elyse Moneypenny and Claire and Joey Gum, and cherished great-grandchildren Harper and Belamie Swiger, Isabella Kesner, Aria Hawver, and Teagan and Sawyer McCarthy.

The family would like to thank Bob’s wonderful caregivers Lou Ann Mick, Maureen Springer, Anna Metz, Gwen Masterman, Maggie, Wanda, Tiffany and Rebecca from Village Caregiving and Billy Bokey from Visiting Angels.

Special thanks also to the Staff of Stonewall Jackson Hospital and Dr. Rob Snuffer for their kindness and compassion.

Family and friends will be received at Hardman Family Funeral Home, 730 North Main Avenue, Weston, from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday May 25, 2023; the rosary will be recited at 6:30pm. A Requiem Mass will be held at 10:00am on Friday, May 26, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Reverend Father Douglas Ondeck officiating. Burial will follow at Machpelah Cemetery in Weston with full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Patrick School Charitable Foundation, in honor of Bob and his dedication to the education of children.
