Obituary for Richard William Smith Sr.

Richard William “Smitty” Smith, Sr., 86, of Weston passed away on Monday, August 26, 2019 in Ruby Memorial Hospital of Morgantown, WV following an extended illness. He was born in New Haven, CT on July 23, 1933: son of the late Floyd Charles Smith and Violet Mae (Dolan) Smith. Mr. Smith first married Betty J. (Inman) Smith, who preceded him in death. Later his companion was the late Olive Shutack and her 7 children. He then had a companion the late Velma Lucas and her 4 children.
Mr. Smith is survived by six children: Nancy McCartney and husband Tom of Jane Lew, Audrey Farley and her late husband Willard of Greenbrier, AR, Betty Brown and her husband Roy of Weston, Michael Smith and wife Brenda of Ardmore, OK, Richard Smith and wife Susan of New Brighton, PA and Donna Stalnaker and husband Alan of Jane Lew, 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, wife: Betty and companions: Olive and Velma, Smitty was also preceded in death by one brother: Floyd Smith, Jr. and one sister: Arlene Vancourt.
Mr. Smith was a retired steelworker with J. & L. Steel Corp of Alliquippa, PA. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance, founding member of the Monaca Bandroom, member of the Highland Vets of Galilee, PA, member of the VFW of Chippewa, PA and the Sons of Italy of Monaca, PA.
Mr. Smith played guitar and banjo and played with Ralph Stanley on stage. He enjoyed Bluegrass music. Richard was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Per Richard and his family’s wishes he was cremated and a Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Bruce MacBeth officiating. Fellowship time will be on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the memorial service. Interment will follow services in the Peterson Cemetery of Weston, WV.
