Obituary for Mildred Louise Radcliff (Smarr)

In the wee hours of the morning of Sunday, October 3, 2021, God needed someone to make biscuits so he picked one of the best biscuit makers from his flock, Mildred Louise (Smarr) Radcliff. Although we loved her and will forever miss her, we knew she is free from all her pain, especially the last two weeks suffering from Covid, only 5 days after her husband had past.

Her parents James Edward Smarr and Cynthia Marcelia (Craig) Smarr, welcomed Mildred into their lives on October 31, 1934. Over the years she was joined by four other sblings. One brother: Billie John Smarr and one sister: Patricia Ann (Smarr) Blake preceded her in death. She has two remaining siblings, a brother: Franklin Ellsworth Smarr, a sister: Frances “Rosie” Smarr Little and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred married the love of her life, Lanta “Lantie” Radcliff, on April 5, 1953. As many women at that time, Mildred was a stay at home wife. Mildred and Lanta had two children: a son Dickie Edward Radcliff and a daughter: Helen Louise Newman. They in turn added 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. They welcomed and loved them all.

If you ever went to Mildred’s house, whether it be for Sunday dinner, holiday meal or just stop by, you had to eat something. If she didn’t have anything prepared, she was a whiz at whipping something up in no time flat. All the kids in the neighborhood knew they could get made from scratch cookies and cake when they went to see Mildred. She loved and took care of a lot of those neighborhood kids.

Mildred also had her Farm Women’s Club, Church Women’s Society and the Gilmer County Senior Center that she loved.

Mildred like her husband Lanta was also a “Godly” woman. She taught Sunday school classes for the nursery and primary class and looked forward to Bible School. In the later years she was unable to attend Sunday school or church due to her health but God was always in her heart.

Family and friends will be received at the Hardman Family Funeral Home 730 Main Avenue Weston on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. when funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. from the Hardman Family Funeral Home chapel with Pastors Carl Radcliff and Peter Dietze officiating. Interment will follow services in the Hiney Hill Cemetery of Linn, WV. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Mildred may be expressed at hardmanfamilyfuneralhome.com.

The family requests that due to Covid that everyone wear a mask at the funeral home for visitation, services and at the cemetery. Due to allergies and asthma in family members, the family requests no flowers, but donations be made in Mildred and Lanta Radcliff’s name made to “their” church: Mt Earnest United Methodist Church care of Regina Gordon Matheny 8358 WV Highway 18 Troy, WV 26443.

Hardman Family Funeral Home of Weston considers it an honor and a privilege serve the family of Mildred Louise (Smarr) Radcliff.
