Obituary for Mary Agnes Sholes

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, our dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was carried away into the arms of Jesus. We celebrate her overwhelming joy as she now worships God in his glorious presence and is also united with her loving husband, son, and other family members. Mary Agnes Sholes, 92, left this world peacefully surrounded by her children.

She was born August 8, 1931, in Weston, WV to the late Clarence Lewis Butcher and Delphia Waggy Butcher. Mary grew up in the community of Jackson’s Mill, the youngest of nine children.

She married at the youthful age of 16 to the love of her life Wilfred Harold Sholes on August 20, 1947, who preceded her in death. They celebrated 59 years of marriage.

She leaves behind 3 children: Wilfred Lee Sholes and wife Sue, Debbie Charlene Myers and husband Randy, both from Jane Lew, Barbara Richardson from Sarasota, Florida, and daughter-in-law Debbie Marlene Sholes of Pricetown, WV. Mary Agnes is also survived by seven grandchildren, Nicholas Lee Nash and companion Debbie, Amy Michelle Burdette and husband Lee, Michael Lane Sholes and wife Andreia, Lori Lee Helstab and partner Duane, Lindsey Ranay Gum and husband Willie, Amanda Jane Richardson, Rebecca Jane Richardson, and seven great grandchildren, Nichole Abagail Lee Nash, Zoey Summer Nash, Madison Isabella Burdette, Sophie Marie Gum, Ember Shenelle Gum, Aliannah Paige Sholes, and Emmalynn Renee Sholes. She loved each one of them dearly and loved hosting dinners to enjoy their company.

Mary Agnes was preceded in death by her youngest son, Harold Michael Sholes, one sister, Danella Bell Butcher Loughry, and seven brothers, Robert Lewis Butcher, PVT Archie William Butcher, PVT Clarence Mark Butcher, Clellie Cleo Butcher, Leo Lake Butcher, PFC Samuel Robert Butcher, and Ted Alfred Butcher.

Our mother was a hard worker and gave her all no matter what the situation. She retired from the Weston State Hospital after 23+ years. She was a lifetime member of the Sharpe Hospital Auxiliary and member of the Harmony United Methodist church. She was a loving and caring caregiver. She instilled in her children to be honest, faithful and take pride in hard work. Some of her greatest joys were working in her flower beds, creating beautiful crafts for her home, and watching and feeding the birds. Her faithful Pekingese companion Bayling was always by her side. However, her most cherished possession was her children and family.

Mary’s family would like to give special thanks to Rob Snuffer for helping us to understand the situation and to WVU Medicine Hospice for coming each time needed and their compassionate care and advice for taking care of our mother.

Family and friends will gather at Hardman Family Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Avenue in Weston, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Reverend Daniel Lowther officiating. The graveside service will follow at Broad Run United Methodist Church Cemetery of Jane Lew, WV. In lieu of flowers, it is requested since mom loved animals so much, that donations be made to the Lewis/Upshur County Humane Society.
