Obituary for Mary Louise Rittenhouse (Smith)

Life’s journey of Mary Louise Rittenhouse, 78, of Weston has been led by the Master’s hand to Heaven’s land on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. She was born on March 24, 1945 in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Richard L. and Mabel (McClain) Smith. Mary was united in marriage on November 15, 1962 to John Russell Rittenhouse, who preceded her in death on October 24, 2019.

Cherishing the life of Mary are her daughter, Anita Karp and husband Joe of Weston, son, John Rusty Rittenhouse and wife Charlene of Jane Lew, 4 grandchildren, Bryson Karp and wife Cierra, Tyler Karp and fiancé Chelsea, Nathan Embree and wife Nikita, and Shelby Stohlmyer and husband Tim, 4 great grandchildren, Jayla Embree, Apollo Embree, Mason Karp, and Graham Karp, and a precious great granddaughter, Josephine Karp on the way, sisters, Wanda Wilson of Parkersburg and Karen Suttle of Weston, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, John, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Roy L. Smith and sister, Linda Starett.

Mary was a graduate of Weston High School. She worked at the Citizens Bank of Weston as a bookkeeper for 8 years. Mary’s Methodist faith was unwavering and shown through her Bible Studies that she held at Crestview Nursing Home from the years of 2003 to 2010, teaching small children at three different churches for a total of 36 years, serving on various Methodist Church Boards, serving as the President of the Women’s Group, and also as Church Treasurer. She spent much time reading and studying her Bible.

Mary was known for having an immaculate home as cleaning was something she enjoyed. She had a passion for cooking and baking and was well known by many for her homemade cinnamon rolls. Most of all, Mary loved her family very much. Mary’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of her life.

Mary’s family would like to give a special thank you to the Serenity Care Home of Buckhannon for the care that was given to her. Mary enjoyed her time there with her dear roommate Blanche.

Family and friends will gather at Hardman Family Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Avenue of Weston on Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with Reverend Beverly Kendall officiating.
