Obituary for Mary Lee Hornor

Mary Lee Hornor, age 96, passed away Thursday, June 25th, 2020 while under the compassionate care of Crestview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation of Jane Lew.

A daughter of the late William Everett Hornor and Lola Rebecca Bott Hornor, she was born on August 5th, 1923. She is survived by one sister Lela Maxine Hornor, Crestview Manor. Also surviving are several cousins, including Helen McClain and husband Bill of Vandalia.

Mary Lee and her sister, affectionately known as the “Hornor Girls”, grew up on the family farm in Vandalia. She and her sister made their livelihood from that farm, raising vegetables, fruits, chickens, cows, pigs, and putting up hay. Their flower gardens were always beautifully kept. In 1985 the “Hornor Girls” relocated to Mace Addition, Weston. She had resided at Crestview Manor since June 2013.

Mary Lee graduated from Walkersville High School in 1943 and was a member of the former Hall’s Chapel Church of Vandalia. Mary Lee was an avid reader. She enjoyed making crafts, working in the garden and flowers, preserving foods, scrapbooking, and weaving rugs. Mary Lee and her sister had enjoyed fellowship with friends at the Lewis County Senior Center.

At her request, there will be no visitation or service. Following cremation her ashes will be buried in the family plot at the Vandalia Cemetery.
