Obituary for Martha Sue Gum (Butcher)

Martha Sue Gum, 78, of Churchville Road Camden went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 5, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Weston, WV on October 4, 1941: daughter of the late Chester Dale Butcher and Virginia Ileda (Patterson) Butcher. On October 29, 1960, she married her husband William (Bill) Lott Gum, who survives.

Martha was blessed with two children: William Todd Gum and wife Joyce of Camden and Melissa Sue Foster and husband Jason of Weston, four loving grandchildren: Christopher Gum and Johnathan Gum, Cody (Angel) McCorkhill and Ada Grace Foster and two great-grandchildren: Mackenzie McCorkhill and Savannah McCorkhill. She is also survived by several nieces. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by two sisters: Regina Strader and Vicki Whetstone.

Mrs. Gum worked as a decorator with the West Virginia Glass Specialty Company of Weston before their closure. To her family and friends, she was proud to be known as a Domestic Engineer. Martha was a graduate of Weston High School and an active member of the Churchville United Methodist Church, along with being very active in all church activities and functions. Martha’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with family especially during the holidays and Sunday dinners. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a great friend and neighbor. Martha’s hobbies included watching movies, playing cards and working in her flower garden. Martha was considered a Churchville community leader and will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Family and friends will be received at the Hardman Family Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston for a public visitation on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 from 4-7 p.m. A private family funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. from the Hardman Family Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Kenny Kendall officiating assisted by Reverend Martin Wine. Interment will follow services in the Snyder Cemetery of Churchville, WV. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Martha may be expressed at hardmanfamilyfuneralhome.com.
