Obituary for Lucy Alice Messenger

Lucy A. Messenger, 98, of Jane Lew went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 1st, 2021. She was born on August 1st, 1923, the oldest daughter of the late Charles L and Hattie J (Richards) Dobbins. She was united in marriage on June 9th, 1946 to Clifford H. Messenger who preceded her in death on November 23rd, 1995.

Forever cherishing the memory of Lucy are 3 sisters: Jerrie Messenger of Jane Lew, Wilodene Smolder of Scott Depot and Mary McCartney of Glen Allen, VA, 2 sister-in-laws: JoAnn Dobbins of Clarksburg and Rebecca Dobbins of Florence, SC, 5 children: Richard Messenger (Donna) of Weston, Helen Derico of Weston, James Messenger (Martha) of West Union, Regina Pritt of Weston and Steven Messenger (Georgia) of Delaware, OH, 9 grandchildren: Brenton Messenger (Erica), Bradford Messenger, Brian Messenger (Angie), Christopher Derico, Timothy Derico (Kimberly), J. D. Messenger (Stephanie), Sarah Gayda (Matt), Bill Pritt (Amy) and Rick Pritt (Kym), 4 step-grandchildren: Amanda Kreibich (Brian), Chad Zirgibel (Megan), Will Kensler and Tammy Hall, 8 great-grandchildren: Faith Messenger, Dylon Messenger, Kinsleigh Messenger, Caden Messenger, Savannah Derico, Cameron Derico, Joe Derico and Tom Derico, 6 step great-grandchildren: Braydon Kreibich, Cole Kreibich, Dylan Kensler, Sara Kensler, Hadden Hall and Cadence Hall. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lucy was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Teresa Messenger, 2 son-in-laws: Paul Derico and William (Tubby) Pritt, great granddaughter Nora Paige Messenger and 3 brothers: William Dobbins, Charles Dobbins, Jr. and Russell Dobbins.

Lucy was a member of the Jane Lew United Methodist Church since February 1958. She served as President of the Women’s Society for 40 years plus held many other offices. Lucy also served as Secretary of the Lewis County Ministerial Association for several years. She worked for the Lewis County Board of Education as a cook at the Jane Lew Elementary School for 21 years and 8 months, where she was well known for baking her hot rolls. Lucy was very caring and loving to all she knew and will be greatly missed by her family.

A private visitation and service will be held at Hardman Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow services at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden in Jane Lew. The family would like to especially thank West Virginia Hospice and her caregivers for their services these last few months.
