Obituary for Lela Maxine Hornor

Lela Maxine Hornor, age 97, passed away Sunday, January 15th, 2023 under the compassionate care of Crestview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation, Jane Lew.

A daughter of the late William Everett Hornor and Lola Rebecca Bott Hornor, she was born on July 4, 1925. She was preceded in death by one sister: Mary Lee Hornor. Surviving are several cousins, including Helen McClain and husband Bill of Vandalia, WV.

Maxine and her sister, affectionately known as the “Hornor Girls”, grew up on the family farm in Vandalia. Maxine and Mary Lee made their livelihood from that farm, raising vegetables, fruits, chickens, cows, pigs and putting up hay. Their flower gardens were always beautifully kept. In 1985 the “Hornor Girls” relocated to Mace Addition, Weston. She had resided at Crestview Manor since July 2013.

Maxine graduated from Walkersville High School in 1943 and was a member of the former Hall’s Chapel Church of Vandalia and a member of the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center. She liked to crochet, read, and enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens. Maxine enjoyed collecting cookbooks and trying new recipes. She and her sister had enjoyed fellowship with friends at the Lewis County Senior Center.

At her request, there will be no visitation or service. Following cremation her ashes will be buried in the family plot at Vandalia Cemetery. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Maxine may be expressed at hardmanfamilyfuneralhome.com.
