Obituary for Jerald Edward "Jerry" Mitchell Sr.

Jerald Edward “Jerry” Mitchell, Sr., 85, of Buckhannon went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 15th, 2023 in Ruby Memorial Hospital of Morgantown, WV. He was born in Holland, NY on October 13th, 1937: son of the late Everett Mitchell and Gladys (Caulkins) Mitchell. On August 10th, 1991, he married Sammie (Davis) Mitchell, who survives.

Cherishing Jerry is his wife, Sammie, three children: Robin Thorley and husband Mark of Delaware, OH, Terri John and husband Pat of Fairbank, AK, and “Skip” Jerald Mitchell, II and wife Sherri of Little River, SC, 5 grandchildren: Steven Cayton and wife Jessie, Michael and Christopher John and Taylor Mitchell and wife Abigale and Corey Mitchell and 8 great grandchildren: Colin, Skyler, Owen, Nicholas, Dejah, Paxon, Izabella and Trinity. Also cherishing his memory are two step daughters: Lori Linger and husband Steve and Amy Hamilton both of Buckhannon, 4 step grandchildren: Tyler Hutchison and wife Patty, Tessa Hamilton and fiancé Bailey Fleming and Dylan Hamilton, and Bobby Lamp and two great grandchildren: Brielle Duncan and George Hutchison. Jerry is also remembered by two siblings: Michael Mitchell and Jane Cieri both of Buffalo, NY and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by one step great grandchild: Samuel Hutchison and 3 brothers: Everett Mitchell, Norman Mitchell and infant brother George Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell retired as Petty Officer First Class serving in the United States Navy from 1955-1974. He spent time in the Philippines, Antarctica, Japan, Thailand and worked at the Pentagon. While in the Philippines, Jerry was the manager of the NCO Club where he met Diana Ross, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones and Bob Hope while they entertained the troops. He was a member of the American Legion Post #7 of Buckhannon.

After retirement from the military, he worked as a custodian for the Lewis County Board of Education. He was a Christian by faith and was a member of the Nay United Methodist Church of Ellamore where he loved Bible Studies on Wednesday night. Jerry enjoyed artwork and painting. He loved reading his Bible and fishing. He enjoyed coffee, chocolate and naps but most of all he loved his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

At Jerry’s request, he will be cremated through Hardman Family Funeral Home and a Celebration of Life service will be held at the Nay United Methodist Church of Buckhannon on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Ralph Mitchell officiating and military honors provided by the Upshur County Honor Guard. Fellowship time is on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Interment of his ashes will be on Monday, January 30th, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the West Virginia National Cemetery of Grafton with full military honors by the United States Navy and the Upshur County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Nay United Methodist Church 560 Oak Road Buckhannon, WV 26201.
