Obituary for Cynthia Diane "Cindy" Sumpter

Cynthia Diane Burnside Sumpter, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on January 18th, 2021. She was born on March 20, 1952 to the late Wade Eugene Lee Burnside and Ramona Marguerite Lemasters Burnside. On August 6, 1971 Cindy married her high school sweetheart James Burke Sumpter who will miss her every day.

Her life will forever be remembered in the lives of her children Tracie Michelle Sumpter Dodson, her husband Jonathan Robert Dodson, and Travis James Sumpter, his partner Alexandra Mary Gerrish, and grandchildren Hannah Grace Dodson, Abigail Faith Dodson, Collin Burke Dodson, Ryland James Sumpter, and Adalyn Grey Sumpter.

Cindy was a passionate educator at heart and earned degrees from Glenville State College and West Virginia University. After teaching in the classroom for over thirty years she became Lewis County’s first technology support professional, bringing funding for tools and equipment to the county schools, helping her colleagues understand how to use technology in the classroom, and setting the foundation for students to use advanced technology in their education. Although she officially retired in 2008, she was frequently called upon and eagerly returned to provide assistance.

Cindy was a Methodist by faith and was a member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Weston. She loved traveling (especially to the beach) and spending time in her sewing room, garden, and kitchen. Most of all she loved her family. She was a gifted artisan - a skill she learned from her mother and passed down to her children and grandchildren. Family and friends will treasure the hand-made heirlooms and memories of the gifts she created – whether a blanket she knitted or quilted or a beautiful cake she made and decorated.

Cindy is also survived by a brother Phillip Burnside and his wife Diane, a sister Bertha Benedum and her husband Eric, brothers-in-law Robert Sumpter and Charles Sumpter and wife Linda, one niece, six nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at the Hardman Family Funeral Home Friday, January 22, 2021, from 5pm to 7pm where social distancing will be strictly observed. Cindy will be laid to rest in the Broad Run Cemetery on Saturday, January 23, 2021, after a private family funeral. In her honor, her family has established the Cindy Sumpter Innovative Teaching Award to provide an annual cash award to an innovative teacher to allow them to further improve their classroom and/or teaching. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to contribute to the fund at https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8wci7bhZ74 or send contributions to the Cindy Sumpter Innovative Teaching Award Fund at Citizen’s Bank of Weston.
