Obituary for Carl Victor "Buck" Ratliff

Carl Victor “Buck” Ratliff, 82, of Alum Bridge, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 under the compassionate care of the WV Caring Hospice Facility in Elkins, WV with his family by his side. Buck was born in Lewis County on July 5, 1940, son of the late Carl Clinton and Bernice (Brown) Ratliff.

On April 22, 1961, Buck married the love of his life, Catherine (Fallon) Ratliff, and together they shared a wonderful 61 years.

In addition to his wife Catherine, the life of Buck will forever be cherished by 5 children: Jim Ratliff of Alum Fork, Judy Jerden and husband Eric of Westfield, Janet Rinehart of Westfield, Jay Ratliff and companion TonyiaWoofter of Westfield, and Shawn Kiser of Westfield, 10 grandchildren: Anthony, Brennan, and Lauren Ratliff, Jeremy, Jonathan, Joseph, and Jayna Jerden, Timothy and Matthew Rinehart, and Braden Mealey, 4 great grandchildren: Andrew and Alex Jerden, and William and James Rinehart, 1 sister: Barbara Squires and husband Jim of Westfield, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Rinehart, an infant grandchild, “Baby Jerden”, son in law, Doug Rinehart, 2 brothers, Jackie and Alfred Ratliff, and 3 sisters, Joyce Weekley, Janet Kiser, and Kay Kelley.

Buck began his career owning his own business Ratliff Dozer Service, working in the oilfield. He then went on to work at the Grafton Coal Mines for 13 years and after that started and owned R & S Timber Service. Buck was known as the best neighbor in Alum Bridge, he would do things such as plow gardens to being the Alum Bridge mechanic for anyone. He was always known to have a fire burning in his shop for anyone to stop by for a visit and had a nickname for everyone. Buck enjoyed playing practical jokes on people especially his brother in law. Buck will always be remembered as the go to man of Alum Bridge and will be missed by all who knew him.

Family and friends will gather at Hardman Family Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Avenue of Weston, on Saturday November 5, 2022 from 11AM-3PM. The funeral service will begin at 3PM from the funeral home chapel with Reverend Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow services at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden of Jane Lew, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the WV Caring Hospice Facility, 169 Diamond Street, Elkins, WV 26241.
